Pocket for iOS, Android and Windows

Pocket for iOS, Android and Windows

Pocket is a combination of cloud based bookmarking and a fine reader. It lets you save link (URL) of articles, news or story you care about to your Pocket account. I am going to show you how you can use Pocket to share information from any platform to your Pocket account and its super easy. So lets get started.

Getting Started

You must create an account on Pocket using your email address. Once done you can start saving links to your Pocket account. There are multiple ways of sending links to your Pocket account. The easiest option is to download the client application on your device which will allow you to share links directly to Pocket. Pocket has apps for following platforms:

  • Android
  • iPhone /iPad
  • Mac OS X
  • Windows Phone
  • Kindle
  • Others

Pocket for iOS comes in two separate apps; for iPhones and iPad. You will even find Pocket for Kobo, S60 and WebOS. Isn’t it sweet that it offers wide range of devices covered and the Pocket team has many other customized apps which are created by other developers.

If you do not find your platform listed above then you can save your links to your pocket account by sending the link via email to add@getpocket.com. Please ensure that link is mentioned in body of the email. You can add articles using any email address and as many you want although you need to confirm the email address when you send the email for first time. You will receive an email in your inbox to confirm and subsequent links will be added directly.

Better Reader

Pocket offers neat interface and possibility to change font and background color. I prefer to read on Pocket because it keeps all distractions like pop ups, ads and other stories. It’s a distraction free interface where you can only focus on your interest. Pocket also shows you the updated information which means it will sync with the source URL whenever you open the article. For an instance, you saved a news story but there is an update on the story now as per latest development. Pocket will intelligently identify this change and it will show you the updated article instead of old story.

Pocket is well equipped with powerful APIs to support images and videos without disturbing them in any way. You can watch this tutorial in this video to witness the simplicity and productivity of Pocket.

How To Protect From Windows 10 Privacy Issues

How To Protect From Windows 10 Privacy Issues

There has been so much hullabaloo about online privacy and NSA spying on our online presence in recent time. Undoubtedly we are indebted to Snowden for his ground breaking and NSA shaking revelations. In other way he has made all of us paranoid about our privacy and this new kid in the neighbour aka Windows 10 is earning quite a reputation for gathering the data and sending it back to mommy Mirosoft datacenter.

This is the guide for you to stop this naughty kid to gather your information (geolocation, contact details, online browsing history etc) and let it flow across the wire on the other side of the globe. Are you ready for getting this kid fixed. Lets get started.

If you don’t fancy new Windows 10 Cortana digital assistant and puts your privacy above all then you can also use an offline account while setting up Windows for the first time.

Disable Sync

While setting up your new Windows 10 you must have specified your Microsoft account to proceed. Once its done your computer will start syncing data with Microsoft servers including browser history, favorites, mobile hotspot/Wi-FI networks names and passwords etc. Sounds scary? isn’t it? Head into Privacy available under Settings and you will find 13 different pages to restore your privacy. There are different sections for controlling the usage of your inbuilt hardware by apps and sharing your advertisement ID, geo location, email and calendar etc. Review each setting carefully and turn it off which you find intrusive towards your privacy.

Disable Cortana (Protect Privacy)

I am pretty sure you must have heard the great thing Cortana does for you in Windows 10 like Siri for Apple. There are some nice tricks it can do for you by bargaining your private information. Cortana accesses your browsing history, contacts, calendars. It does not stop there it also watches your moves on your device and captures how you use your device like your favorite shopping websites, lock screen of your device, music which you listen to etc. It may not be concerning for you if you ain’t a privacy advocate but this definitely helps Microsoft in delivering the advertisements especially for you.

You can click on search option right next to your Start menu and click on the setting icon as you can see in the snapshot posted above. You will find the way to shut this spy down.

Turn Off Geo Location

Windows 10 is capable of using your geo location and if your device has inbuilt hardware then nothing like it. You can stop tracking of your geo location by heading into privacy settings and hit “Location”. You can turn off location tracking for your device which may affect your ability to use maps and other apps which rely on your location.

You can also selectively allow applications to use your location by choosing from the list of installed apps. That may look something like this.

There are other important settings which you can configure similarly. Remember that apps can use your camera, microphone and radios. Make the best use of this information and stay safe online and enjoy Windows 10.

Why is Windows 10 upgrade offered at no cost?

Why is Windows 10 upgrade offered at no cost?

Yes you heard it right, its  not a scam that this time Microsoft has decided to offer Windows 10 upgrade for free to Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users for the first year. You can consider it as a consolation prize for bearing with Windows 8.

Of course there are some exceptions to this party Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise and Windows RT/RT 8.1. But for a regular user like most of us its a pretty sweet news. Still there is a question lurking around that why would Microsoft miss out on such a huge opportunity to add a pile of revenue. Is there a catch?

No, there is no trick being played on consumers but its their new thinking coming from old ideas. Apple also offered Mac OS X Mavericks for free and gradually declined the price for updates as well. As a matter of fact they never relied on their operating system to make money. They have always enjoyed the success of their laptops fitted with good decent hardware. Unlike Microsoft who always relied on their operating system to generate more revenue.

Declining PC Sales

Since we are witnessing a decline in PC sales every year in favor of smartphones and tablets, it will definitely hurt Microsoft income from Windows operating systems. Windows 10 free upgrade is one tile to ensure Windows business keeps bringing cash. Did you say How?

Very few people upgrade immediately upon the release of new operating system and stay faithful to old friends (Windows 7, Vista or even XP). Don’t be surprised, just tell your neighbor about your Windows 10 upgrade and he will show you his content XP expression. Having everyone upgrading to Windows 10 will make life simpler for developers because they don’t have to work on developing different applications for different operating systems. Developers can develop more quality applications and quickly.

Microsoft is working on making its app store popular among users and developers to boost the Windows devices sales and making additional pie by app sales

This helps Microsoft selling those apps through their app store to take a cut. Apple has been doing this master work for long time now. If this strategy works then more developers would be working with Microsoft to sell their apps resulting in rise of Windows based devices.

It will also help Microsoft to improve their Microsoft account signups and other cloud based services like OneDrive.
