WhatsApp Privacy Policy Changed: It Will Share Your Phone Number With Facebook

Facebook owned WhatsApp announced that it will share you phone number with mother company Facebook. This is the first time WhatsApp privacy policy has changed in last 4 years. WhatsApp who claimed to be committed to protecting user’s data and privacy has taken a ‘U’ turn.

In a blog post they confirmed the move to share user data with Facebook to integrate businesses with messaging platform. The blog recalls notable features like WhatsApp Web, Calling and end-to-end encryption before dropping the bomb.

WhatsApp Privacy Policy History

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum claimed no changes to be made in future when Facebook acquired the company in this blog post. This is what he had to say about their new partnership with Facebook and changes for users:

Today we are announcing a partnership with Facebook that will allow us to continue on that simple mission. Doing this will give WhatsApp the flexibility to grow and expand, while giving me, Brian, and the rest of our team more time to focus on building a communications service that’s as fast, affordable and personal as possible.

Here’s what will change for you, our users: nothing.

It is clear that WhatsApp has decided to make some money after offering free service for so long without any ads. The company has over 1 billion users worldwide. It seems like a right time to reap the reward. There is a great revenue prospect with such kind of active user base.

How Does It Affect A User?

There will be no change in user experience at least for now. You will not be seeing any intrusive ads like other messaging apps. WhatsApp clarifies that it will use your contact number to deliver better friends suggestions and relevant ads based on the “coordination” between two companies. You might receive notifications from business you are associated with like a bank or an airline. Your bank may send notification about a fraudulent transaction, or an airline informing you about the cancelled flight.

The blog does not go in detail about how WhatsApp data can be used to show you relevant ads in Facebook. Your experience is not going to change for sure but a lot of things will change in the background.

How To Avoid Sharing Contact Number

You have 30 days to make the decision. If you have already opted-in and want to change that now then you still have some time on your side to change your decision. You can head to this post to understand how to stop sharing your contact number with Facebook.

There is a mixed reaction about this change among WhatsApp users. I am concluding this chilly news on this note that “ads are coming”.

Facebook Dislike Button Is On Its Way – Its Confirmed

Facebook Dislike Button Is On Its Way – Its Confirmed

I always wanted to tell people how much I dislike certain nagging posts from certain friends on Facebook forcing them to ponder where did they go wrong. There is always someone working on to make your wish come true. Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook Dislike button will be coming soon during a town hall meeting on Tuesday held at Facebook HQ.

Famous online community Reddit has this downvote feature which gives community users to share a constructive criticism to the post creator. It was learnt that Facebook kept the Dislike button covered under the wrap despite the increasing demand for it from Facebook users because they did not want to become Reddit.

It would be a very bold and exciting move for Facebook as it has been known for positive image in the absence of something as dislike button. However, there are occasions when like button does not do justice to what you feel about something which you see there on Facebook. Probably, Facebook has also realized it and they have decided to give away the simplicity of their social networking platform by accepting the long anticipated dislike button.

Products and Services which are using Facebook to build their image will have to make adjustment to their strategy to adapt to this change. There are many facets of this change which is going to impact us in many ways and we will be able to see that shift once the change goes live.

We hope that you also get to pass your feedback that why do you dislike certain posts on Facebook once Dislike button is rolled out to public similar to when you report any photo or posts as objectionable. It would help the author to become better and produce better content which is more accepted by people.

Facebook has become a live channel between service providers and consumers and companies take concerns raised on social media more seriously and act swiftly to avoid a dent on their social reputation. Dislike button hit would be a quantitative mark of their dubious distinction.

Overall it would be tough for Facebook to rollout dislike button and come out of their “positive feedback only” world. Here is a town hall post where you can see Mark Zuckerberg interacting with people at Facebook HQ.

Facebook Dislike button is reality

WhatsApp Has 900 Million Active Users Says CEO Jan Koum

WhatsApp Has 900 Million Active Users Says CEO Jan Koum

Mark Zuckerberg must be a happy man for last couple of weeks. Last week Facebook crossed 1 billion active daily users mark on 25th August and now WhatsApp achieved another milestone of 900 million active users. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum took to Facebook to share this news with his boss Mark Zuckerberg.

WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook last year for whopping ~ $19 billion despite WhatsApp loss in 2013 and 2014. Many experts opined that it was a way too much price for the messenger service. Facebook was on shopping spree in last couple of years and it was apparent they were going after the user base. Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in 2012.

Twitter has only 300 million monthly active users where Facebook is working on their vision to bring as many users under their wide range of social products.

Facebook has some crunching numbers with them. Here is a number perspective:

  • Facebook Messenger service has 700 million users
  • WhatsApp just announced 900 million active users
  • Instagram officially announced 300 million users last year Dec
  • Facebook juggernaut has already crossed 1 billion mark

Its been argued that active user count is not a criteria to quantify the success of any platform. For an instance if a user came online on WhatsApp for few seconds in a 30 day period, so he will be considered as an active user. The standard of success can be the number of messages sent in a month to qualify for being an active user.

Its still unclear that how Facebook monetizes the Messenger and WhatsApp business. Recently, they revealed a personal digital assistant “M” in the Messenger. The aim is to associate it with Company’s e-commerce business.
