The wait is finally over for Nexus fans. Google recently announced Nexus device confirming most of the anticipated changes by Nexus enthusiast over last few months. This time its not only 1 but 2 Nexus devices. Nexus 5X manufactured by LG which is perceived as Nexus Essential and Nexus 6P as Premium by Huawei.

I will help you make your mind which device is best suited for you. So lets take a look at Nexus 5X vs. 6P details.

Display & Design

I will start with display as this property distinguishes these two devices significantly. Nexus 5X is an iteration of Nexus 5 (2013) in terms of display and probably most of Nexus fans prefer this device to be compact. The last year Nexus 6 (2014) phablet size did not go very well and it was not accepted by the fan base. This time around they tried to fix it by giving two choices to consumers. These are the readings:

  • Nexus 5X (2015) – 5-inch, 1080p IPS LCD display, 147.0 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm and 136g
  • Nexus 6P (2015) – 5.7-inch, 2K AMOLED display, 159.4 x 77.8 x 7.3mm and 178g
  • Nexus 6 (2014) – 6-inch, 2K AMOLED display, 159.2 x 82.3 x 10mm and 184g
  • Nexus 5 (2013) – 5-inch, 1080p IPS LCD display, 137.9 x 69.2 x 8.6mm and 130

There are quite a few changes from their predecessors. Lets find out the common standout features this time around

  • Fingerprint Scanner aka “Nexus Imprint”
  • USB 3.0 Type-C Reversible Fast Charger – which means no more guessing which side is up
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Front Facing Speakers

As expected every Nexus device brings new version of Android operating system. This time it will be Android 6.0 Marshmallow which does not bring anything revolutionary but there are few good enhancements.

Wireless charging is missing in these two devices and it may be a spoilsport for few of us. Nexus 5X only has 1 front facing speaker where 6P has two. Apparently, these are few of those details which puts 6P ahead of 5X.

Google is emphasize the quality of camera in this year Nexus devices which has not been a strong point. Surprisingly, the cameras are identical in these two devices despite the low Nexus 5X price with minor differences.

  • Nexus 5X – Rear: 12.3 megapixels (1.55 micron pixels), f2.0 aperture, 4K video recording; Front: 5MP, f2.0 aperture, 1080p video recording
  • Nexus 6P – Rear: 12.3 megapixels (1.55 micron pixels), f2.0 aperture, 4K video recording; Front: 8MP, f2.4 aperture, 1080p video recording

Google has dropped OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) explaining that they have compensated it by increasing the micron size. Moreover, they have will back it up by software based DIS (Digital Image Stabilization). This is not a good news if camera is big factor for you.

Performance – CPU / RAM

This is another area where the price difference is justified.

  • Nexus 5X – Snapdragon 808, 2GB DDR3 RAM
  • Nexus 6P – Snapdragon 810 v2.1, 3GB DDR4 RAM

Probably you have heard about overheating problem in Snapdragon 810 but it is fixed in v2.1 which is used in Nexus 6P. It is too early to say how it would fair because a lot depends on Android 6.0 Marshmallow performance. Till date Nexus 5 (2013) running on Snapdragon 800 is snappy and it can handle anything you throw at it.

2GB of RAM may be make the specs look little dull for Nexus 5X but I think it would be fine until we don’t see new memory leaks problem at the time of initial Android 5.0 release. It would be unfair to pass the judgement because Nexus devices get pure Android operating system experience without any skin added by the phone manufactured. Which makes it desirable among Nexus fans and devices produced so far have no complaints on performance front.

There is a significant bump to battery in both Nexus devices although wireless charging will be greatly missed. Google explained that wireless charging would have interfered with the design of Nexus phones and with Type-C Reversible you get fast charging which is up to seven hours of use after only ten minutes of charging.

  • Nexus 5X – 2,700 mAh
  • Nexus 6P – 3,450 mAh

Google has also announced some advancement in their upcoming Marshmallow OS which can save your battery drainage significantly.

Price – Nexus 5X vs. 6P

Nexus 5X is mid range budget phone and 6P definitely belong to premium category. Google has not repeated the last year mistake by making an unlikely expensive phablet. Nexus devices are famous for their latest hardware at competitive price.

  • Nexus 5X – $379 (16GB), $429 (32GB)
  • Nexus 6P – $499 (32GB), $549 (64GB), $649 (128GB)

As per the information available on Google Play Store, Nexus 5X will be priced at Rs 31,900 (for 16GB variant) and Rs 35,900 (32GB), while Nexus 6P will be available at Rs 39,999 (32GB) and Rs 42,999 (64GB) in India.

It is expected that these devices will be available in India by the end of October to make most out of the festive season demand. Here is a quick summary of Nexus 5X vs. 6P.
