This August Google announced that they are restructuring the company. Yesterday, the official paper filing is done with United States Securities and Exchange Commission and yesterday was the last day when stocks were traded as Google. On 5th October when stock and share trading begins it would be under “Alphabet Inc”. This is what Larry Page said about new company Alphabet on its homepage:
“Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable. So we are creating a new company, called Alphabet. I am really excited to be running Alphabet as CEO with help from my capable partner, Sergey, as President.”
– Larry Page
What does this change mean?
Larry Page explained that he never considered Google as a conventional brand. They explored unknown territories in most unconventional way. They expanded themselves in unrelated fields be it driver less car, Internet balloons, Google Internet (Fiber), Nest (Home Automation), Google Glass and Life Sciences. The list goes on and Sergey and Larry wants to continue the trend by making Google free with this merger.
This does not change anything for Google as it will will work as a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet. Sundar Pichai will continue to lead Google as a CEO. Now Google includes Android, Search, YouTube, Apps, Maps and Ads. Fiber, Nest, Life Sciences, Google X, Self driving cars etc will be Alphabet’s responsibility. The idea here is to keep Google focused on what they are doing right now and let Alphabet venture into some strange and less speculative businesses. We know Google has created such businesses from Google Maps, Chrome and YouTube which are making billions of dollars today.
What is in it for Alphabet?
Larry Page has made it clear that they don’t want to become complacent and harp on Google’s success. Its going to be a sort of Octopus which will be spreading its arms and legs in all directions controlled under Alphabet. This gives Alphabet to do more without disturbing other businesses which are already well established or getting there. This change has made Google shed some of its load by taking away Glass, Internet and few others. Larry has assumed the role of CEO and Sergey as President in the newly formed company.
As an end user it does not make any difference that Google is now Alphabet except that we can’t Alphabet Alphabet but we could Google Alphabet.

We all feel that you can’t keep up with the latest technology. You spend handsome amount to keep the best of what technology has to offer in the market and few months later you see it losing its charm due to more advanced piece of hardware gaining popularity. I feel your pain. It becomes imperative to upgrade your smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs sooner than later.
Luckily, there is a very economical way of reviving your PC or laptop by giving it an SSD gift- The Solid State Disk. Its a new generation of hard disk storage which does not store the information in traditional way.
The traditional hard disks use metal platters with magnetic coating. Magnetic coating saves your data and there is a reader which is mounted on an arm similar to gramophone. The platters spin at high speed and let this arm read the desired information on the disk.
Modern operating systems are aware of SSDs and have special code to offer enhanced performance and optimization of such disks. Apple has been using SSD in their laptops and ultrabooks for a long time.
Solid State Disk does not have any such moving parts rather they contain flash memory chips which are interconnected. Wait! It does not mean the speed of flash drive would be similar to SSD disk. SSDs offer faster performance than flash disk as they are technically different due to which they are expensive than flash disk of the same capacity.
The next question is how fast it can be and is it worth? So let me share some tests ran by me on conventional HDD and SSD.
Samsung Evo 850 SSD Speed Test Result
Speed Test on HDD
You don’t need to be a geek to reach this conclusion that Samsung SSD is 10x faster than the conventional disk. These benchmark results were achieved with Samsung Evo 850 120 Gb SSD connected to Sata III. The other disk is WD Green Caviar 2 TB on Sata III. This is pretty convincing if you were looking to speed up your machine.
SSD enhances your system performances in several ways:
- Reduces boot time of your operating system
- Application launches immediately
- Overall system responsiveness is snappier
- Save or open files instantly
- Significant improvement in file copying and movement
How to choose SSD?
Its a technical dilemma when it comes to choosing speed or capacity since 120 Gb SSD would cost you around 5K whereas you can buy a 2 TB disk at the same price. You always need large storage and can’t fit in your large music library and movie collection in meager 120 Gb. Here is what you can do. You can install your operating system on SSD which keeps your system files and apps on faster storage device and you can keep your entertainment stuff on your conventional large storage capacity.
Which SSD brand is good? There are couple of vendors who are really good at this. OCZ which is now owned by Toshiba is great. Samsung has done some great job with their Evo series and it came very well and they are offering at a really good price. I am already using one and I have no complaints. There are few things you should consider before buying SSD:
- It should be Sata III compatible
- Review the Read/Write speed
- Warranty which is usually around 3 years some of them offer 5 years too
- Buy additional 2.5 inch enclosure for desktop machines
When installing SSD on your desktop cabinet you would find it smaller since all storage devices are 3.5 inch but SSD are 2.5 inch. Hence, you should buy an SSD mount adapter which is available for additional 100 bucks.
All operating system treat SSD like any other hard disk, so there won’t be any difference when it comes to installing the operating system or applications. However, you may want to install optimization software provided by your vendor to fine tune your SSD for better performance and longer life.
I hope this article is informative for you, please let me know how did your upgrade go.
This real story is somewhat sad that what a world this place has become but more heart warming because its a win of humanity.
A 14 year old student of Texas School was arrested because school officials mistook the clock the kid made as a bomb. The boy claimed that he made the clock to impress his teacher but when he showed it to her she mistook it.
I built a clock to impress my teacher, but when I showed it to her she thought it was a threat to her. So it was really sad that she took a wrong impression of it, and I got arrested for it later that day,” he added.
Ahmad was released later and the charges were dropped by Police officials later when they discovered the real story. However, school maintained the 3 day suspension for him. Feeling awful? Don’t be because this is the part I referred as the silver lining for humanity.
While this story broke out press reporters reached Ahmad’s place to cover the story. Ahmad’s family offered pizza for the reporters waiting outside their house and broke Internet with their awfully nice hospitality which is rare to be seen.
Wait, the goodness does not end here because what happened next will make your heart warm. There was flood of support from unthinkable corners for young Ahmad. President Barack Obama invited Ahmad to White House asking to bring his clock.
Mark Zuckerberg did not waste time and handed over an open invitation to Ahmad and asked him to drop by Facebook HQ

Google and Twitter also came for Ahmad’s support and offered scholarship and internship
NASA acknowledged Ahmad’s effort and asked him to join internship
The support for Ahmed is pouring in from all corners and #IStandwithAhmed was among the top trends on Twitter. Ahmad thanked everyone on his twitter account which his family setup after this incident.
Well, all I would say is that the boy wanted to impress a single soul (his teacher) but destiny has some other plans for him. This clock is surely a great invention for Ahmed which has unlocked giant tech firms door for him, received invitation from the president Barack Obama. #IStandwithAhmed keep building.
I always wanted to tell people how much I dislike certain nagging posts from certain friends on Facebook forcing them to ponder where did they go wrong. There is always someone working on to make your wish come true. Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook Dislike button will be coming soon during a town hall meeting on Tuesday held at Facebook HQ.
Famous online community Reddit has this downvote feature which gives community users to share a constructive criticism to the post creator. It was learnt that Facebook kept the Dislike button covered under the wrap despite the increasing demand for it from Facebook users because they did not want to become Reddit.
It would be a very bold and exciting move for Facebook as it has been known for positive image in the absence of something as dislike button. However, there are occasions when like button does not do justice to what you feel about something which you see there on Facebook. Probably, Facebook has also realized it and they have decided to give away the simplicity of their social networking platform by accepting the long anticipated dislike button.
Products and Services which are using Facebook to build their image will have to make adjustment to their strategy to adapt to this change. There are many facets of this change which is going to impact us in many ways and we will be able to see that shift once the change goes live.
We hope that you also get to pass your feedback that why do you dislike certain posts on Facebook once Dislike button is rolled out to public similar to when you report any photo or posts as objectionable. It would help the author to become better and produce better content which is more accepted by people.
Facebook has become a live channel between service providers and consumers and companies take concerns raised on social media more seriously and act swiftly to avoid a dent on their social reputation. Dislike button hit would be a quantitative mark of their dubious distinction.
Overall it would be tough for Facebook to rollout dislike button and come out of their “positive feedback only” world. Here is a town hall post where you can see Mark Zuckerberg interacting with people at Facebook HQ.
Facebook Dislike button is reality
